You’ve done your preoperative exercises and followed your diet plan. You’ve attended appointments with your orthopaedic surgeon and read all there is to read to prepare. You feel ready for your total joint replacement surgery. But there is one more important step – preparing your home! Taking time to organize your space can make your recovery smoother and more comfortable.
Prepare Your Recovery Space for Comfort:
- Prepare and freeze individual meals that can be easily reheated.
- Decide where you will spend most of your time during recovery. Place frequently used items within easy reach. These items may include:
- Tissues
- Phone
- Remote control
- Reading materials
- Medications
- Move items from high shelves to countertops to avoid unnecessary reaching.
- Identify family members or friends that will support you with household tasks while you heal.
Remove Hazards to Stay Safe:
- Remove trip-and-fall hazards such as loose cords, low furniture, and clutter.
- Eliminate unnecessary area rugs or floor coverings. Consider attaching rugs to the floor with strong double sided tape if necessary.
- Create wide, clear walking paths in every room.
- Install grab bars, non-slip mats, and sturdy, slip-resistant shower chairs in your bathrooms.
Create a Safety Plan:
- Add telephones in every room for easy emergency access.
- Use an alert system such as an alarm, bracelet, or another way to quickly call for help in case you fall.
- Arrange for a friend or family member to check in with you daily.
Set Yourself Up for a Smooth Recovery
